Disk-Based Backup…No More Tape!

Enterprises are moving increasingly towards disk-based backup and relinquishing their tape backup. While tape backup has been useful for the past few decades, the slow speed of tape backup devices and unreliable data recoveries have created challenges for IT professionals. In contrast, more inline with technological progress is the utilization of disk-based backup. Sidepath partners with Data Domain, who is a leading provider of disk-based backup and network-based disaster recovery systems.

Data Domain systems use Global Compression™, its high-speed de-duplication technology, to store several months of backup and recovery data at a price point equivalent or lower than tape via massive data de-duplication and compression. On average, 10x-30x data reduction rates are achieved at very high throughput rates, shrinking data volume to an absolute minimum. With these compression rates in place, enterprises can maintain their data onsite on an average of 30-90 days.

Enterprises can expect faster restores and ensure backups are reliable due to Data Domain’s high end verification process—its data invulnerability architecture runs continuous data verification to ensure data is always protected. For disaster recovery or remote office protection, enterprises can also expect to see a reduction of up to 95% in bandwidth requirement when vaulting data offsite because Data Domain’s technology only needs to transport new or unique data over the network to be stored on disk. This is achieved by breaking the data into a small number of fundamental parts, which when replicated can be used to rebuild the original data, thus only requiring new or unique data to be transported.

Data Domain delivers the performance, reliability and scalability to address the data protection needs of enterprises of all sizes. Its products and solutions integrate into “existing” customer infrastructures and are compatible with leading enterprise backup software products. Data Domain’s DDX Array Series won Storage Magazine-SearchStorage.com’s “2006 Storage Product of the Year” in the Backup Hardware Category.

Easy to Manage and Cost-Effective Data Storage

The trend in data storage is moving from the traditional direct-attached storage (DAS) to more efficient storage area network (SAN) products. Simultaneously, IT professionals are looking for easy to manage and cost-effective solutions. This is where Sidepath steps in to help meet its customers’ challenges. Sidepath partners with Compellent and EqualLogic to provide varying solutions for its customers’ data storage needs.

Compellent’s Storage Center utilizes Dynamic Block Architecture technology to intelligently optimize data movement by using metadata to keep track of all blocks. Storage Center provides scalable, build-as-you-grow hardware, a single unified interface, and a suite of software applications for dynamic capacity, data progression, data instant replay for quick recovery, and remote instant replay. Storage Center is also technology independent, providing simultaneous support for fibre channel and iSCSI server connections. This sophisticated approach to storing, recovering and managing data means customers can purchase less storage than normally thought needed for complete safety. Compellent won InfoWorld’s “2006 SAN of the Year” award and was also named a “2007 Storage Hot Company” by Storage Products Guide.

EqualLogic’s PS Series arrays are intelligent, iSCSI-based storage that integrates an advanced and comprehensive software feature set with a fully-redundant and hot-swappable hardware architecture. This solution delivers the benefits of networked storage in a modular, enterprise-class storage platform that is easy to install, manage and grow, as well as dramatically reduce the costs of storage acquisition and ongoing operations. EqualLogic's PS300E storage array won Storage Products Guide’s “2006 Product Excellence Award.” The PS3800XV array won “2007 SAN Product of the Year” at the Techworld Awards.

Data Centers for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery

Data center hosting is a great solution for meeting a company’s business continuity and disaster recovery planning needs, as well as for other mission-critical operations. Since very few companies can afford to invest in their own data centers, companies normally outsource their data center hosting services to various vendors.

Sidepath’s Senior Principals, Jim Andronaco and Patrick Mulvee, have extensive experience in the data center hosting, advanced IP networks, and telecommunications arenas. With their combined industry experience of over 20 years, they are well networked with data center providers to obtain the most suitable solution for every company. Jim and Patrick were major contributors to growing SBC/AT&T’s burgeoning data center hosting and Virtual Private Network revenue in the West Region in just a few years. One reason for their success is due to their consultative approach when discussing network solutions with their customers. Their determination in maintaining honest and professional long-term customer relationships is another reason for the success in maximizing SBC’s data center to full capacity with over 400 hosting customers.
